Abstrakt:
The exposure of soluble rocks, such as salt, gypsum, or limestone, to fluid flow often triggers chemical interactions between the fluid and the solid minerals. These interactions degrade the mechanical properties of the rock, leading to the formation of distinct geomorphological patterns, including rillenkarren, tsingys, and scallops. This study focuses on the formation of scallops, i.e., cup-shaped depressions with sharp crests that develop on dissolving rock surfaces. We employ a micro-continuum modelling technique, coupled with a volume-of-solid approach for mineral dissolution, to investigate the two-dimensional pattern formation for the characteristic properties of salt. The numerical simulations reproduce the formation of sharp shapes observed in both natural settings and laboratory experiments, corresponding to the emergence of tip singularities in the evolution of the interface. We also present three-dimensional simulations that capture the early stages of surface pattern development, providing insights into the dynamics of dissolution-driven morphogenesis.
